In plain English
Backpack brands are a bit like car makers or shoe companies: each has its own idea of what makes a good design. Some focus on cushioning and comfort, some on keeping your back cool, and some on making the pack as light as possible.
The big, well-known brands sell in many stores and offer lots of sizes. Smaller 'cottage' brands are small workshops, often started by long-distance hikers, that make very light packs in smaller batches.
When you compare brands, look past the logo. Ask three questions: does it come in my size, does its design suit the kind of trips I take, and what happens if something breaks? That last one matters more than people expect, because repair and warranty promises differ a lot from one company to the next. Brand descriptions on this page are the companies' own claims, not independent measurements.

Hiking-backpack brands are not interchangeable: each builds a distinct suspension, fit range, and durability philosophy, and the same stated size fits differently across makers. This hub reviews the major brands and their key model lines so you can choose the one shaped for your back.
Osprey is known for adjustable fit and ventilated Anti-Gravity suspension; Gregory for plush, body-mapped carry; Deuter for ventilated Aircomfort backs; Granite Gear and the cottage makers (Hyperlite Mountain Gear, Gossamer Gear, ULA) for light weight and thru-hiker durability; REI Co-op, Kelty, and Teton for value. These reviews draw on published manufacturer specifications and the pattern of aggregated owner reviews — never invented lab tests, prices, or star ratings. Where a pack has a genuine weakness, the review names it, and every recommendation links back to the fit hub so brand choice never overrides fit.
Where the major brands came from
Several of the familiar names have long histories. Deuter was founded by Hans Deuter in 1898 as a sailcloth and linen weaving business in Bavaria, and says it introduced its Aircomfort suspended-mesh back in 1984.10 REI was formed in 1938 by 23 friends as a consumer co-operative.11 Kelty was founded by Dick Kelty in 1952; the company credits him with using nylon, aluminum frames, padded shoulder straps and waist belts, and says the first year produced 29 packs.1
Osprey began in 1974 as Santa Cruz Recreational Packs in California, making custom-fitted packs, and is now headquartered in Cortez, Colorado.2 Gregory was founded by Wayne Gregory in 1977, is based in Salt Lake City, and describes its philosophy as packs that should be worn, not carried.3 Samsonite agreed to buy Gregory in 2014, and its release credits Gregory with pioneering a waist belt that adjusts to the angle of the hips.12
The cottage ultralight makers
The lightweight brands mostly grew out of long-distance hiking. Gossamer Gear, formerly GVP Gear, was started by civil engineer Glen Van Peski and says it has outfitted hikers since 1998.4 Brian Frankle founded ULA in Logan, Utah in 2001; his Pacific Crest Trail thru-hike took his base weight from 25 lb to 12 lb, and ULA says it keeps all manufacturing in the USA.13 Joe Valesko founded Zpacks in 2005, tracing it to his 2004 Appalachian Trail thru-hike.14 Hyperlite Mountain Gear was started in 2009 in Maine and built early products from Dyneema Composite Fabric, then called Cuben Fiber.15 Granite Gear dates to 1986 and a paddling trip in Quetico Provincial Park.16
These makers tend to publish lower load ratings than heavier framed packs, which fits their design goal. Treat their marketing, like any brand's, as the company's own claim.
Read the word 'lifetime' carefully
Warranty language hides big differences. Osprey states it will repair or replace a bag for any damage, regardless of when it was made.5 Gregory covers defects for as long as you own the product but excludes normal wear and tear, and notes that foam padding will permanently compress with use.17 Kelty defines lifetime as the reasonable life of the product, not the owner's lifetime.8 Teton's lifetime warranty applies only to U.S. customers.18
Other makers use fixed terms. Deuter gives a two-year warranty plus a lifetime repair service for incidental damage where repair is possible.19 Zpacks offers a two-year limited warranty.6 Gossamer Gear covers manufacturing defects for one year for U.S. purchasers.7 Hyperlite covers manufacturing defects, requires a dated receipt and excludes purchases from unauthorized dealers.9 ULA covers defects and repairs accident and wear damage for a fee.20 If long-term repair support matters to you, compare these terms before you compare features.
