Hiking Backpack Hub: Honest buying guides, sizing help & how-tos
Editorial Standards

Editorial Policy & Review Process

How we research our guides, choose the products we recommend, review content before it publishes, and handle mistakes when we make them.

How we research

We research every guide using manufacturer specifications, published fit and capacity guidance from the brands themselves, real trail and backpacking use, and aggregated owner reviews that reveal how a pack performs once it's actually loaded up and on trail. We read the spec sheets, compare stated capacity, torso range, and load ratings across packs, and cross-check claims against the pattern of real owner feedback.

We do not conduct first-hand lab testing. We are not a testing lab, and we don't claim to be one. Nothing on this site should be read as "we bought this and tested it ourselves" unless a guide explicitly says so. Where a page draws on outside sources, we list them so you can read further and judge the evidence yourself.

How we choose products

Products earn a place in our guides based on specifications, verified ratings, and the pattern of owner feedback, never based on payment. We do not accept pay-for-placement, and no manufacturer or retailer can buy a better ranking or a spot on a list.

Some of our product links are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission when you buy through one, at no extra cost to you. That relationship is separate from, and never influences, which products we recommend. Full detail is on our affiliate disclosure page.

For the exact rubric — the factors we weigh per category and how we turn a longlist into a ranked list — see how we rank.

Our review process

Every guide is reviewed by Dana Okoro, our Editorial Director, for accuracy and clarity before it's published. That review checks that specs are stated correctly, sources are represented fairly, and the guidance is plain enough to actually act on.

Backcountry safety content carries a plain notice. Anything touching navigation, water crossings, altitude, or severe-weather conditions tells readers that our guides are general information to help them choose gear, not a substitute for professional instruction on backcountry safety, and points them toward qualified instruction or a guide service for anything beyond their own experience level. We treat that notice as non-negotiable, not boilerplate.

Corrections policy

If you spot an error, an outdated spec, or something you think we got wrong, tell us. Every correction request is reviewed by our Editorial Director, and if we're wrong, we fix it and don't pretend otherwise. See our Contact page for how to reach us and what to include for the fastest turnaround.

Independence & funding

Hiking Backpack Hub is reader-supported. We fund the site primarily through affiliate commissions earned when readers buy products through our links, at no extra cost to them. We don't sell editorial placement, and no advertiser or manufacturer reviews or approves our content before it publishes.
