A fastpacking pack is a running-vest-derived backpack that carries a minimal overnight kit at trail-running speed. It sits between a trail-running vest and a lightweight backpacking pack, holding a stripped-down shelter, sleep system and food while keeping the body-hugging, no-bounce fit runners need on technical singletrack. Fastpacking trips typically run one to four days and cover far more daily mileage than standard backpacking because the hiker runs the smooth, runnable terrain and hikes the steep or technical sections. The pack has to work at both gaits without shifting, so fit and load placement matter more here than in ordinary day hiking or multi-day backpacking.

Fastpacking is covering multi-day trail routes by running the runnable terrain and hiking the rest, carrying a minimal overnight kit — shelter, sleep system, food and water treatment — in a running-vest-style pack instead of a traditional framed backpack. It blends ultrarunning technique with backpacking self-sufficiency, letting a hiker link big-mile routes like a section of the Wind River High Route or a multi-day loop in two to four days instead of a week.

The approach grew out of ultrarunning in the 2010s, as runners doing long point-to-point routes and fastest-known-time attempts needed to carry overnight gear without losing running form. A fastpacking kit trims weight everywhere: a minimalist shelter (tarp or single-wall tent), a quilt or compact sleeping bag, no cook system in many cases, and food calculated by the day rather than padded with extras. Total pack weight, including food and water, usually stays under 15 pounds so the hiker can still run on flat and downhill sections without the pack bouncing or pulling at the shoulders.

A running vest suits fast hiking and short overnight trips under roughly 10 pounds of total load, since its chest-strap fit and lack of a structured hipbelt keep it from bouncing at a run; a fastpacking pack with a light internal frame or stiffened back panel suits heavier multi-day loads because it transfers some weight off the shoulders. The choice comes down to trip length and total carried weight, not personal preference alone.

Running vests distribute weight across the chest and shoulders using compression straps and a close, low-profile fit, with no hipbelt to interfere with arm swing or breathing at pace. That works well up to about 8–10 pounds. Above that, an unstructured vest starts to sag and bounce, which is uncomfortable over hours of running and can cause chafing. Fastpacking-specific packs add a light frame sheet, foam back panel or minimal stays and a slim, low-profile hipbelt that rides higher than a backpacking hipbelt, giving some load transfer without the bulk of a full framed pack. Compare that to the frame types used in 45-55L multi-day packs, which use full internal frames because they carry two to three times the weight a fastpacking setup does.

A standard running vest comfortably carries about 4 to 8 pounds of gear plus 1 to 1.5 liters of fluid in soft flasks or a bladder, enough for hydration, nutrition, a lightweight jacket and mandatory race gear. Vests aren't built to carry a full overnight kit; without a hipbelt or frame, weight above roughly 10 pounds rides entirely on the shoulders and chest straps, which becomes fatiguing on long runs and unstable on technical descents.

Race-oriented vests such as the Salomon ADV Skin series and Ultimate Direction's race vests hold two 500ml soft flasks on the front straps, a rear compartment for a jacket and mandatory kit, and small zip pockets for gels and a phone. Ultra-distance vests built for 50-mile-plus races and light fastpacking, including options like Ultimate Direction's FKT Vest and Black Diamond's Distance packs, add extra volume — typically 15 to 24 liters — for a compressible sleep layer or emergency bivy without moving into full pack territory.

Most fastpacking trips call for a pack in the 20 to 35-liter range, which fits a minimalist shelter, quilt, spare layer and one to two days of food while keeping total pack weight low enough to run in. Solo, ultra-minimalist overnight setups can work in 15 to 20 liters; trips longer than three or four nights, or with shared group gear, push toward 35 to 40 liters, where the pack starts to resemble a 25-35L pack more than a running vest.

Packs built specifically for fastpacking, such as Osprey's Duro and Dyna series, Gregory's Miko and Nano hybrids, and Dyneema Composite Fabric options like Hyperlite Mountain Gear's Junction, sit in this middle zone. They use lighter-denier fabrics or DCF laminate to cut weight over standard backpacking nylon, stretch-mesh front pockets for quick-access food and layers, and pole loops or bungee systems for hands-free running on descents. Choosing between this range and heavier setups often comes down to the same ~20%-of-bodyweight load guideline used across backpacking, applied with a lower ceiling since a fastpacking pack lacks the hipbelt that carries roughly 80% of the load on a full-size framed pack.
