A loaded hiking backpack should land near 20% of the hiker's body weight, and pushing far past that threshold turns a manageable pack into a shoulder- and knee-punishing chore. Base weight — everything carried except food, water, and fuel — is the number ultralighters track and cut, because it's the one weight variable fully under a hiker's control before the trip even starts. A 150-pound hiker keeping a loaded pack near 30 pounds and a 200-pound hiker keeping one near 40 pounds are both following the same guideline, just scaled to their own frame. Base weight and loaded weight differ: base weight ignores what gets eaten and drunk, while loaded weight is what's actually on the hipbelt at the trailhead.

A loaded hiking backpack should weigh no more than about 20% of a hiker's body weight for multi-day trips — roughly 30 pounds for a 150-pound hiker or 40 pounds for a 200-pound hiker. Day hikers can carry closer to 10–15% of body weight, since day packs skip the shelter and multi-day food.

The 20% figure is a starting guideline, not a hard ceiling. Smaller or less-conditioned hikers often do better staying nearer 15–18%, while trained backpackers with a well-fitted hipbelt can carry closer to 25% comfortably over shorter stretches. A properly adjusted hipbelt carries roughly 80% of a loaded pack's weight, which is why fit affects how heavy a pack feels more than the number on the scale does.

These numbers assume a multi-day trip with a full sleep system and several days of food. A day pack loaded for a single outing should land well below these figures, since it's missing a tent, a sleeping bag, and most of the food weight a multi-day pack carries.

Base weight is the weight of everything carried except consumables — food, water, and fuel — plus the empty pack itself. It's the figure backpackers use to compare gear systems, because food and water weight changes daily depending on trip length, while base weight stays fixed from the first day to the last.

Base weight covers the "big three" — backpack, shelter, and sleep system — plus clothing carried in the pack, a cook system, and any tools or electronics. It excludes what's eaten, drunk, or burned as fuel along the way, since those items are consumed and don't represent a fixed load. Backpackers commonly sort base weight into three rough classes:

  • Traditional: base weight above 20 lb (9 kg), typical of packs built around durable, heavier fabrics and full-featured frames.
  • Lightweight: base weight under 20 lb (9 kg), usually achieved by trimming redundant gear and choosing lighter fabrics without going fully minimalist.
  • Ultralight: base weight under 10 lb (4.5 kg), which usually means a frameless or minimal-frame pack, a non-freestanding shelter, and materials like Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF) in place of heavier nylon.
Brands like Hyperlite Mountain Gear, Gossamer Gear, and ULA Equipment build around ultralight base-weight targets, while Osprey and Gregory build heavier, more structured packs aimed at comfort under bigger, traditional loads. Choosing between them starts with matching base-weight class to the trips being planned, which ties into choosing the right pack capacity.

Cut pack weight by targeting the heaviest items first — the "big three" of backpack, shelter, and sleep system — since lighter versions of these save more than trimming small accessories. After the big three, weigh every remaining item on a kitchen scale and cut duplicates, oversized stuff sacks, and anything carried "just in case."

Cutting pack weight works best as a deliberate process rather than a single swap:

  • Weigh everything. Lay out the full gear list and weigh each item on a kitchen scale, then log it in a spreadsheet. Real numbers expose which items are actually heavy versus which just feel heavy.

  • Target the big three first. Backpack, shelter, and sleep system typically make up 50% or more of base weight, so a lighter frameless pack, trekking-pole shelter, or lighter-fill sleeping bag delivers the biggest single gains.

  • Cut duplicates and "just in case" items. A second knife, redundant first-aid supplies, and full-size toiletries add up fast without adding real utility.

  • Choose lighter materials where it matters. DCF and lighter-denier nylons cut pack weight; titanium cookware cuts kitchen weight.

  • Measure consumables instead of guessing. Pre-portioning food and carrying only the fuel a stove will actually burn avoids a hidden weight buffer for the whole trip.

  • Choose a smaller pack on purpose. A smaller-capacity pack physically limits overpacking, one more reason capacity and base weight get chosen together.
  • A frameless or minimal-frame pack sheds carried weight but shifts more load onto the shoulders unless the base weight underneath it is genuinely low.

    A pack is too heavy when it forces a forward lean at the waist, causes numbness or bruising at the shoulders and hips, or regularly exceeds about 25–30% of body weight. Hipbelt slippage and fatigue setting in earlier than normal are also signs the load has crossed from manageable into excessive.

    Because a properly fitted hipbelt carries roughly 80% of a loaded pack's weight, a poorly adjusted or badly sized hipbelt makes a moderate load feel too heavy well under the 20% guideline. Common signs a pack has crossed into overloaded territory include:

    • Numbness or tingling in the shoulders after 20–30 minutes of walking
    • Bruising or chafing where the hipbelt sits
    • A hunched, forward-leaning posture that persists even on flat trail
    • The hipbelt sliding down off the hips repeatedly
    • Fatigue and hot spots appearing far earlier than on previous trips with a similar load
    Consistently overloading a pack raises the risk of strain over multi-day trips, so treating these signs as a cue to reassess matters more on longer trips than shorter ones. Correct torso-length fit and hipbelt adjustment address a lot of perceived overload before any gear needs cutting, which is why measuring torso and hip size and adjusting your pack's straps are the fit fundamentals behind how a given load actually feels on the trail.
