A helper makes this measurement more accurate, since holding a tape steady at the C7 vertebra while reading a number on your own back is difficult. Stand naturally — don't arch or slouch — while the helper runs a flexible cloth or vinyl tape measure from the C7 point down the spine's curve to the iliac-crest line. A rigid tape gives an inaccurate, straightened-out number because it can't follow the spine's curve.
Hip size for a backpack hipbelt is measured by wrapping a tape measure around the body at the same iliac-crest point used for torso length, not around the waist or the widest part of the hips, and reading the circumference in inches. This number sizes the hipbelt independently of torso length on packs with interchangeable belt sizes.
Locate the iliac crest the same way as for torso length — hands on the waist, thumbs back, feeling for the top ridge of the hip bones. Wrap the tape measure horizontally around the body at that height, snug but not pulled tight, and read the circumference. This number matters because the hipbelt, not the shoulder straps, is designed to carry most of a loaded pack's weight — a properly fitted belt sitting directly over the hip bones is what transfers load off the shoulders.

A pack's frame-size label — XS, S, M, L, or a numeric size — maps to a torso-length range that each brand sets on its own, so there's no universal standard; an 18-inch torso can be a Medium on one brand and a Small on another.
