A 65 liter-plus expedition pack carries winter, mountaineering and week-plus loads where volume outranks weight savings. At this size a pack exists to hold bulk — a four-season tent, extra insulation layers, technical hardware, and seven or more days of food — not to shave ounces. Trips of one to five nights in three-season conditions are almost always better served by a 50–65L multi-day pack; the 65L+ category trades pack weight and bulk for room that a smaller frame simply cannot provide.
A 70L+ pack becomes necessary once cold-weather gear, technical equipment, and more than seven days of food have to travel together in one carry — winter camping, glacier travel, resupply-free thru-hiking stretches, or trips that split shared group gear like a stove, rope, or four-season tent. Below that threshold, the extra volume mostly sits empty and adds unnecessary pack weight.
Common triggers for sizing up to 65L+:
- Winter or shoulder-season trips needing a heavier sleeping bag, insulated pad, and extra base layers
- Mountaineering objectives carrying rope, hardware, crampons, and an ice axe alongside standard camping gear
- Resupply-free stretches of seven or more days, common on sections of the Pacific Crest Trail or Continental Divide Trail
- Group trips where one hiker carries shared gear — a stove, water filter, or tent body — for the party
- Photography, hunting, or basecamp trips hauling specialized equipment beyond standard backpacking kit

An expedition backpack is a large-capacity, load-bearing pack — typically 65L to 100L+ — built around a rigid frame, a heavily padded hipbelt, and abrasion-resistant fabric to move loads that daypacks and standard multi-day packs aren't designed to carry. The frame, not the fabric, does the structural work.
Most expedition packs use an internal frame with one or two aluminum stays running the length of the back panel, paired with a rotating or hinged hipbelt for hip movement under load. A smaller number of hunting- and hauling-focused models still use an external frame — an exposed aluminum or composite frame with the pack bag mounted on top — which some users find carries very heavy, awkward loads more comfortably than an internal frame. Fabric on expedition packs skews heavy-duty: 400–1000 denier nylon or a nylon/polyester blend on high-wear panels, versus the 100–210 denier fabrics common on lighter multi-day packs. Liter capacity and comfortable carry weight are two different numbers, and a pack with room for 70 liters of gear isn't automatically comfortable at the weight that volume produces. Comfortable load is set by hipbelt fit, frame stiffness, and how correctly the pack is sized to the wearer's torso — not by the liter figure printed on the tag.
Two facts govern comfortable carrying, regardless of pack size:
Torso length, not height, determines pack fit, and it's measured from the C7 vertebra (the bony bump at the base of the neck) down to the iliac crest (the top of the hip bones). Most 65L+ packs ship with an adjustable torso range and a corresponding size-specific hipbelt, and getting that measurement right matters more at this capacity than at any smaller size, because a poorly fitted frame under a heavy load transfers weight to the shoulders instead of the hips.

A 70L pack suits winter and mountaineering trips because it holds the extra insulation, four-season shelter, and technical hardware those conditions require, provided the pack includes attachment points for an ice axe and crampons and a frame stiff enough to carry the added weight without sagging. Volume alone doesn't make a pack winter-ready — the attachment system and frame rigidity matter as much as the liter count.
Winter and mountaineering loads run heavier than three-season trips of the same length: a warmer sleeping bag, an insulated pad, extra fuel for melting snow, and technical gear all add weight before food and water are counted. Look for external ice-axe loops, crampon patches or pouches, and compression straps rated to cinch down a partially full pack — winter loads often start heavy and lighten as food is eaten, so a pack that compresses well stays stable throughout the trip. Packing at or near the top of the 20%-of-bodyweight guideline is common on winter trips; going meaningfully over it for multiple days adds strain on the hips, knees, and lower back and is worth avoiding where the itinerary allows lightening the load through resupply or gear-sharing.
