External attachment — compression straps, daisy chains, tool loops and lash points — carries gear that won't fit inside the main compartment of a hiking backpack. A loaded pack needs somewhere to secure a tent body, a foam sleeping pad, a wet rain jacket, trekking poles, or an ice axe once internal space runs out. These systems sit outside the frame and hipbelt but still change how a pack rides: a loose compression strap lets gear sway with every step, while load-lifter and sternum straps fine-tune how the harness pulls against the frame. This guide covers four systems: compression straps, pole and axe loops, external lash points, and the load-lifter and sternum straps that dial in fit.

Compression straps are paired webbing straps, usually running horizontally or diagonally across the sides of a pack, that cinch the pack body inward. Tightening them shrinks unused volume in a partially loaded pack, pulls the load closer to your back for better balance, and creates a strap loop you can lash extra gear under.

Most backpacking and hiking packs carry two to four pairs of compression straps, anchored either to side compression rails sewn into the pack body or directly to the main fabric panel. Two buckle types dominate: ladder-lock buckles, which hold tension under load, and side-release buckles, which snap open with a single press. Packs with three or more strap rows let you compress the top, middle, and bottom of the load independently — useful when a pack is only half full. Under-compressed packs are a common source of on-trail imbalance: loose fabric shifts the pack's center of mass away from your spine, the opposite of what the frame and hipbelt are built to do. Cinching straps evenly on both sides keeps the load centered.

Most hiking backpacks attach trekking poles and an ice axe using a small loop near the pack's base paired with a hook-and-loop strap higher up, plus a dedicated pole holster or quick-clip loop, or the side compression straps themselves — so tools stow without taking the pack off.

The traditional two-piece axe attachment pairs a lower loop, often called the axe loop, with an upper hook-and-loop closure called a shaft keeper. The axe head slides down through the lower loop, the shaft runs up the side of the pack, and the shaft keeper wraps around it near the top. The same hardware often doubles as a trekking-pole attachment. Other methods have grown up around trekking poles specifically, since poles fold or telescope shorter than most axes:

  • Bottom loop + shaft keeper — the standard ice-axe attachment, found on most backpacking and mountaineering packs, also used for a single pole.
  • Side compression strap threading — pole tips slide under an already-cinched compression strap, no dedicated hardware required.
  • Quick-stow elastic loop — a stretch loop low on a side pocket that grips one pole for one-handed stowing without breaking stride.
  • Dedicated pole holster pocket — a reinforced pocket, common on mountaineering-oriented packs, sized to hold a pole basket or an axe pick without wearing through the fabric.
Packs aimed at scrambling or winter routes tend to carry two or more of these systems side by side, since a hiker may need both poles and an axe stowed at once. A harness matched to your torso length, found by measuring your torso, also keeps these lower attachment points within easy one-handed reach.

A pack lashes a tent, sleeping pad, or wet gear outside using front daisy chains, bottom sleeping-bag straps, or dedicated pad straps — parallel horizontal straps on the front panel sized to cradle a rolled foam pad or a tent body against the pack.

Front shock-cord lacing, a zigzag of elastic cord threaded through fabric loops, is common on smaller day and overnight packs and works best for a light layer, not a heavy load. Daisy chains — rows of bar-tacked webbing loops stitched down the front or side panel — let you clip a carabiner-mounted stuff sack anywhere along the row rather than at one fixed point. Larger backpacking packs more often add two horizontal straps below the main compartment, sometimes paired with a separate bottom sleeping-bag access zipper, sized for a rolled pad or a compressed sleeping bag stuff sack.

External lashing carries real trade-offs. Anything strapped outside adds snag risk on brush and low branches, and it shifts weight further from your spine than gear packed inside — the opposite of what good load transfer through the hipbelt is trying to achieve. Lash points work best for bulky, low-density items like a foam pad or a dry tent, not heavy items like food or water, which carry better inside, close to your back.

Load-lifter straps connect the top of the shoulder harness to the pack frame a few inches above the strap's lower anchor point; tightening them at roughly a 45-degree angle pulls the load's weight in toward your shoulders and keeps the pack from tipping backward away from your body. The sternum strap is the adjustable horizontal strap connecting the two shoulder straps across the chest, and it keeps the shoulder straps from sliding off your shoulders.

Load lifters work as a small, final adjustment, not the main load-bearing connection — that job belongs to the hipbelt. Cranking them flat against the pack body over-tightens them, which can pull the top of the pack into the back of your head or create a gap between your shoulder blades and the harness; the goal is a moderate pull, not a strap pulled fully taut. The sternum strap slides up or down a track sewn onto each shoulder strap, so it can sit about an inch or two below the collarbone regardless of torso length or shoulder width. Many sternum-strap buckles include a built-in whistle, a small but genuinely used safety feature. Both straps are separate from the small stabilizer straps that angle down from the hipbelt itself, which pull the load in against the hips rather than the shoulders.
