Daisy-chain webbing along the front or sides of a pack offers a third option: threading a pole shaft through two loops and clipping or tying it off. This works on any pack with daisy chain but takes longer to rig than purpose-built pole hardware.
Poles should sit tips-down, angled slightly outward from the body, never crossing behind the head. A loose, uncovered tip can snag on brush or other hikers; a rubber tip protector reduces that risk on tight trail sections.
A tent attaches to a hiking backpack by splitting the load: the tent body and fly, in a stuff sack, lash under the lid or to a front daisy chain with compression straps, while the poles and stakes pack inside the main compartment near the frame, where rigid items sit safest. Carrying a wet tent outside, sealed in its own sack, keeps a soaked fly from dampening dry gear inside.
Tent poles are rigid and best carried inside, standing upright along the frame or laid flat against the back panel, since external carry risks bending a pole against rocks or a pack frame. The tent body and fly compress well and tolerate external straps without damage, which is why most hikers keep the fabric outside and the poles inside.
Placement affects balance: lashing a tent under the lid, close to the back panel, keeps weight near the body's center rather than hanging low and swinging. A tent stuffed loosely above the frame's support raises the load's center of gravity and makes the pack feel less stable on uneven ground.
Compression straps should hold the tent snug against the pack body without over-tightening enough to crush gear packed underneath the lid. On group trips, some parties split a tent between two hikers — one carrying the body and fly, the other the poles and footprint — spreading both weight and volume.
A closed-cell foam sleeping pad lashes to the outside of a hiking backpack, most often rolled and secured under the lid with compression straps or stood vertically against one side using side-compression webbing. An inflatable sleeping pad usually compresses small enough to pack inside the main compartment instead, avoiding external bulk entirely.
Two common external methods exist for foam pads. The horseshoe method wraps the rolled pad around the outside perimeter of the pack — over the top, down one side, and clipped near the bottom — distributing bulk evenly but adding width that can catch on narrow trail sections or brush. The top-strap method lashes the rolled pad flat under the pack's lid, a faster setup that keeps the pad's width closer to the pack's natural profile.
Because foam pads are bulky but nearly weightless, their main effect on balance is drag and snag risk rather than added load — a loosely lashed pad can shift in wind or catch branches on switchbacks, so straps should hold it firmly against the pack body. Inflatable pads, once deflated and rolled into their sack, generally pack inside against the back panel or bottom, protected from punctures by surrounding gear.
An ice axe secures to a hiking backpack using a dedicated axe loop near the base of the pack and an upper strap or "axe tab" that cinches around the shaft, with the head positioned down and the pick turned inward against the pack body. This two-point system holds the axe rigid against the frame instead of swinging loose on descents.
The lower loop, a webbing tab sewn near the pack's base, holds the axe's spike end; the upper axe tab, a small strap higher on the pack body, wraps the shaft and buckles shut to lock the axe in place. Manufacturers generally orient the head down and the adze or pick turned toward the pack, reducing the chance of the sharp edge catching clothing or a hiker's arm during a fall or scramble.
