In plain English
Asking whether a brand is worth it is really asking three things. Will it fit my body? Will it carry my load comfortably? And what happens if it breaks? The answers often change more from model to model than from brand to brand.
Some companies make big, cushioned packs that handle heavy loads. Others make very light packs for hikers who have trimmed their gear down to the essentials. Putting a heavy load in a very light pack is like asking a folding chair to hold a piano: it was not built for that job.
The quiet difference is the warranty, the promise a company makes about repairs. Some fix almost anything, at any age. Others fix only factory mistakes, and some have a time limit or apply only in the United States. Read the terms before you buy, not after a strap tears.

Warranty terms, brand by brand
Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee promises to repair or replace a bag for any damage at no cost, regardless of when it was made.1 Gregory guarantees against defects in workmanship and materials for as long as you own the pack, excluding abuse and normal wear.2 Granite Gear offers a limited lifetime warranty to the original owner against defects.4 Kelty warrants packs bought from authorized sellers for the lifetime of the product, which it defines as the product's reasonable life.3
Other terms are shorter or narrower. Deuter gives two years plus a lifetime repair service where repair is possible.5 Zpacks offers two years against defects.6 Gossamer Gear covers defects for one year for U.S. purchasers and does not cover fabric wearing out.7 Hyperlite covers manufacturing defects, requires a dated receipt and excludes packs bought from unauthorized dealers or third-party sites.8 ULA covers defects and repairs accident and wear damage for a fee.9 REI members get one year for replacements or refunds under REI's satisfaction guarantee, with exclusions.10 Two brands that both say lifetime can mean very different things.
Frames and load ratings behind the names
Brand names hide very different frames. REI's Flash 55 uses a spring steel frame and is rated comfortable to 35 lb, while the Traverse 60 uses a tubular aluminum frame rated to 45 lb.11,12 Granite Gear rates the Crown3 60 at 25 lb without its molded frame sheet, 35 lb with it and 43 lb with the optional aluminum stay.13 Gossamer Gear's Mariposa 60 uses a closed aluminum frame with a pivoting hip belt and a 35 lb maximum.14 ULA's Circuit combines a carbon fiber hoop, a foam frame and one aluminum stay, with a 35 lb maximum.15 The Granite Gear answer's minimal frame is therefore adjustable, not absent.
The Deuter answer contrasts framed Aircontact with ventilated Aircomfort. Both have structure: Deuter says Aircomfort uses a lightweight, flexible spring steel frame behind its mesh.16 The real difference is contact padding with channels versus a mesh panel with an air gap.
Fabric claims: read them as the brand's words
Hyperlite says Dyneema fiber has a strength-to-weight ratio 15 times greater than steel, and Zpacks makes a similar claim.17,18 Those are fiber claims from the brands, not proof that a finished pack outlasts a nylon one. The Hyperlite answer here refers to Dyneema Composite Fabric, but Hyperlite describes its Southwest pack as using a fully woven 200-denier Dyneema fabric, a different construction from the laminated composite.19 ULA and Gossamer Gear use Robic nylon on packs like the Circuit and Mariposa, and Zpacks' Arc Haul uses Gridstop fabric.15,14,20
Where the brands come from
Deuter dates to 1898 and Kelty to 1952.21,22 Osprey began in 1974 as a custom pack maker in California and is now headquartered in Cortez, Colorado.23 Gregory was founded in 1977 and is based in Salt Lake City.24 ULA was founded in Logan, Utah in 2001 and says it keeps all manufacturing in the USA.25 Hyperlite started in Maine in 2009 and added a partner facility in Mexico in 2020.26 REI is a consumer co-operative formed in 1938.27
