A hip belt (also called a hipbelt or waist belt) is the padded component that buckles around a hiker's hips, positioned over the iliac crest rather than the waistline. Its job is mechanical: route weight down through the pack's frame and onto the skeleton at the pelvis, which can bear far more sustained load comfortably than the shoulder muscles alone.
Why the hip belt matters more than the shoulder straps
Shoulder straps on a framed pack are designed to stabilize the load and keep it close to the back, not to carry most of its weight. When a hip belt is fitted and adjusted correctly, it does the heavy lifting; when it's missing, too loose, or positioned wrong, the shoulders end up compensating, which causes fatigue and soreness on longer hikes far faster than a well-transferred load.

Not every pack needs a heavily padded hip belt — small daypacks under roughly 15 pounds of load can get by with a simple webbing strap or no belt at all, since the total weight rarely exceeds what the shoulders can comfortably manage. Heavier, multi-day loads are where a properly fitted hip belt becomes the difference between a comfortable carry and a painful one.
