An internal-frame backpack builds its structure into the pack body itself: aluminum stays, a molded plastic or foam frame sheet, or a combination of both, sit inside a sleeve against the back panel rather than as a visible external frame. This keeps the pack's profile narrow and holds the load close to the hiker's spine.
How it differs from an external-frame pack
An external-frame pack suspends the pack bag from a separate rigid aluminum tube frame that sits outside the fabric, holding the load away from the back. An internal-frame pack instead embeds its frame inside the pack, against the back panel, which lowers the load's center of gravity and improves balance on uneven or off-trail terrain at the cost of some back ventilation.

Why most hiking packs use an internal frame
Internal frames became the standard hiking pack design starting in the 1970s and 1980s as more hikers moved onto steeper, rougher, off-trail terrain, where a pack that moves with the body outperforms one riding on a rigid external structure. Today, brands including Osprey, Gregory, Deuter and Mystery Ranch build the large majority of their hiking and backpacking packs around internal frames, ranging from single-stay ultralight designs to dual-stay expedition packs rated for 50 pounds or more.
