Modelled regional averages for 2010–2023 (rainfall) and calculated daylight hours; they describe the wider area, not a reading taken on the trail. “Relative warmth” compares each month with the warmest and coldest months of this place’s own year. It is not a temperature, and the high parts of a route are colder than the region around them.

Rain is heavy all year in Fiordland, so no month is truly dry. The modelled monthly averages range from about 196 mm in June to 271 mm in October, with January, May, October and December all topping 255 mm. Daylight is the bigger swing: roughly 15.4 hours in December against 8.6 hours in June. Relative to this place's own year, December through March are the warmest months, June through September the coldest, and April and November sit in the mild range. Expect rain whenever you go.

Milford Track — Fiordland season by season

Early season · November

November opens the Great Walk season, when huts must be booked in advance for a fixed date and direction. Average daylight is around 14.7 hours, and the month sits in the mild range for this place's year. Modelled rainfall is typically about 239 mm, so rain cover matters. Long evenings help with pacing the four days, but check the Department of Conservation page for the 2026/27 season dates before you plan.

Summer · December to March

December through March are the warmest months of the year here, with daylight running from about 15.4 hours in December down to 12.4 hours in March. Rainfall is still substantial, typically 222 to 260 mm a month, with February the lowest of the four at around 222 mm. This is the core of the Great Walk season, so hut bookings for your chosen date and direction are required. Long days give the most flexibility on the track.

Autumn shoulder · April to May

April is the last month of the Great Walk season and sits in the mild range, with daylight down to about 10.7 hours and typical rainfall around 238 mm. May falls outside the season. It is cooler, with about 9.4 hours of daylight and some of the heaviest modelled rain, near 262 mm. From 1 May bookings are not required, there are no rangers at the huts, and conditions are more serious, according to the Department of Conservation.

Winter and early spring · June to October

June through September are the coldest months of this place's year, and October is cool. Daylight is shortest in June at about 8.6 hours, rising to roughly 13.3 hours by October, which is also the wettest month at around 271 mm. This is the off-season: bunks are first come, first served, there are no rangers at the huts, and the Department of Conservation says conditions are more serious. Confirm current conditions with them first.

Official season guidance

Department of Conservation (DOC): 1 November to 30 April (Great Walk season; 2026/27 dates on the DOC page); outside it, off-season conditions apply

The Milford is one-way and, in the Great Walk season, requires advance hut bookings for a fixed date and direction. No camping is allowed on the track. Outside the Great Walks season (1 May to 31 October) bookings are not required and bunks are first come, first served; there are no rangers at the huts and conditions are more serious.

What to pack for the season

Rain is a constant here, so pack as if every day will be wet: a reliable waterproof jacket, pack cover, and dry bags for sleep layers. Add warm layers in the cooler months and a headlamp when daylight drops below about ten hours. Sun protection still belongs in the summer kit. Camping is not allowed on the track, so you are packing for huts.

For layering, rain cover and weather planning, see hiking in rain, heat and cold.

Timing mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is treating the Milford as a walk-up trip. In the Great Walk season you need hut bookings for a fixed date and direction, and the track is one-way, so you cannot swap days freely. Another is trusting a single month's rainfall figure, when every month here is typically wet. A third is heading out after 30 April without understanding that off-season conditions are more serious and there are no rangers at the huts.

Common questions

When is the Milford Track Great Walk season?

The season runs from 1 November to 30 April, with 2026/27 dates listed on the Department of Conservation page. During this period you need advance hut bookings for a fixed date and direction, and camping on the track is not allowed. Check the DOC page for the current dates before planning.

Which month is driest on the Milford Track?

No month is dry. The modelled regional averages show June as the lowest at about 196 mm, but rainfall stays high all year. February, at around 222 mm, is the lowest inside the Great Walk season. These are regional averages, not trail measurements, so treat rain cover as essential whenever you go.

Can I hike the Milford Track outside the Great Walk season?

Yes, between 1 May and 31 October the Department of Conservation says bookings are not required and bunks are first come, first served. There are no rangers at the huts and conditions are more serious. Daylight is also much shorter in winter, so check current conditions with DOC before you commit.

How much daylight should I expect on the Milford Track?

Daylight swings from about 15.4 hours in December to roughly 8.6 hours in June. In the Great Walk season you will typically have between 10.7 hours in April and 15.4 hours in December. Plan your daily pace around the shorter end if you hike late in the season, and carry a headlamp.
