A packed winter trail and a genuine snowshoeing day are different problems. Microspikes and a warm layer get you through a packed trail; once the snow is soft, deep or untracked, you'll sink to your knees without flotation. Snowshoes solve that, but they change everything downstream of it too — how hard you work, how fast you cool down, and how far you'll get in a day.

The layering problem is what people underestimate. Breaking trail in snowshoes is strenuous work, closer to hiking uphill through sand than walking a groomed path, so you'll be sweating inside a shell within minutes of a climb — and cooling fast the moment you stop for water or a photo. The fix is a system you can vent wide open while moving and close down fast at breaks, plus a warm layer that goes on the instant you stop, before you've started shivering.

The other change is pace and navigation. Unbroken snow buries the blazes and worn tread that mark a summer or packed-winter trail, so you're navigating by map, compass or GPS more than by following a visible path — and breaking your own trail is slow, often far slower than your normal hiking pace.
